Website is devoted to joint project of STCU and NASU #6064 "Developing and full-scale production preparing of distributed smart biosensors for environmental protection", performed by scientific staff of Data acquisition systems department of V.M.Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Project duration: February, 2015 – January, 2017

About Project

Unforeseen changes of climate, anthropogenic disasters and fast spreading of epidemiological viral and bacterial diseases of green plantations and agricultural plants demonstrated acute necessity to develop and full-scale production of biosensor tools for express-diagnostics of plant state in real-time mode and estimating of influence level of climatic changes, viral and bacterial load, stress factors of natural and anthropogenic origin on the state of plants.

Acquisition of live (real-time) and objective data about plant cover state in most cases is very important factor, which causes future strategy of keeping parklands and woodlands and proper decision making in ecological monitoring and environmental protection. Certainly, it would be ideal to obtain information about improvement or worsening of state of parklands or woodlands beforehand, but not after the event. It lets to avoid increasing costs on environmental protection and save plants and trees from possible loss, and also to help protect plants and trees of parklands and woodlands from viral and bacterial diseases.

Therefore, development and preparing for full-scale production of new low-cost wireless smart biosensors and creating of data acquisition systems on their base for ecological monitoring is actual problem for environmental protection not only in Ukraine, but also in other countries.

Project purpose

The main project purpose is developing and preparation for serial production of low-cost wireless smart biosensors for express-diagnostics of plant state, creating of proper software and methodical support for combining of developed biosensors in wireless sensor networks, what make possible to spread the application of new information technologies and equipments for ecological monitoring and environmental protection, for example, for estimating of viral and bacterial load, control of influence of climatic conditions and express-diagnostics of common level of impact of stress factors of natural or anthropogenic origin on green plantations of woodlands and parklands.

Implementation of distributed wireless smart biosensors in the area of ecological monitoring and environmental protection makes possible to protect plants from viral and bacterial diseases, decrease influence of stress factors of natural and anthropogenic origin on green plantations, save fertilizers and protection tools etc. Real-time information obtaining about worsening of plant state on some territory indicates clearly about worsening of ecological state on this territory in whole.

Expected Results

1. It will be designed and created new pilot samples of wireless smart biosensor for express-diagnostic of plant state in ecological monitoring and environmental protection and will be created technical documentation for serial production of the biosensor according to requirements of Ukrainian contract manufacture. The advantages of this biosensor are small weight and dimensions, low power, low cost and possibility to integrate biosensors in sensor network. The technical documentation will be developed with CAD/CAM-technology due to it will be easy to use it in modern manufactures in any country.

2. It will be developed the architecture of sensor network on the base of proposed wireless biosensors, including algorithms and software for data transferring. It will be developed the data formats according to measurement information about plant state.

3. It will be developed architecture of data acquisition system on the base of developed biosensors and methods of interaction of its separate elements by means of standard communication protocols. It also planned, that data acquisition will be made by means of mobile unmanned tool (e.g. electric unmanned quadcopter). For system it will be developed data acquisition methods and algorithms.

4. It will be produced a small batch of wireless smart biosensor on the contract manufacture, which equipped with modern efficient technique. Due to it will be possible in near future to start the serial production of the biosensors to satisfy needs in Ukraine and other countries.

5. It will be developed methodical support for express-diagnostics of different plants and trees for wireless smart biosensors, notably methodical support, which can be used in ecological monitoring and environmental protection on large territories of woodlands and parklands.

6. The developed methodical support will be carried to applied software to input them to biosensor microcontroller unit.
